Rockford Road Closures Expand as Major Infrastructure Projects Intensify
Multiple upcoming infrastructure projects are coming up that will cause rolling road closures, detours, and disruptions for Rockford pedestrians through this summer.
11th Street Construction Triggers Rolling Closures
Ongoing infrastructure work across the city of Rockford is creating shifting traffic patterns, specifically along the heavily traveled 11th Street corridor.

According to the press release, crews continue water service replacements between Broadway and 18th Avenue, keeping the stretch closed to traffic.
City officials did confirm that once this phase wraps up, 11th Street will reopen up to 18th Street, only for closures to move north. The next phase will shut down the segment from 18th Street to Columbia Street for pavement removal and underground utility upgrades.
The rolling closures are expected to create prolonged detours for commuters and local businesses.
Pedestrian Safety Adjustments Near Collins Aerospace
Near Collins Aerospace, crosswalk signals near Harrison Avenue have been removed as part of ongoing upgrades.
Temporary signage is now in place, requiring drivers to stop for pedestrians while new signal and lighting infrastructure is installed.
Contractors are expected to continue progressing north, bringing intermittent disruptions as the work advances.
Jefferson Street and Rock River Projects Add Pressure
Compounding congestion, the Lower Jefferson Street storm sewer project, launched on March 19, will run through July 10, 2026.
The project includes installing a 24-inch storm sewer, utility removals, pavement replacement, shoreline stabilization, and additional work, adding another layer of detours downtown.
Utility Work and Detours Expected to Continue
Meanwhile, the Rock River bank stabilization effort remains underway along the Rock River corridor. The project, expected to wrap this spring, has closed the pedestrian path under the Jefferson Street bridge.

Foot traffic is being rerouted near Parking Lot 19, where parking capacity is now limited due to the construction project.
Utility provider ComEd is also active in the area, relocating aerial infrastructure. Officials say message boards and marked detours are in place, but drivers should expect continued delays as multiple projects overlap into the summer construction season.
