Illinois Residents Urged to Cut Energy Costs During Dangerous Heat
As dangerous heat and humidity continue across Illinois and Wisconsin heading into the holiday weekend, residents are encouraged to take simple steps to stay cool while avoiding a pricey electric bill.
Illinois Officials Warn High Heat Could Drive Up Energy Costs
The warning comes from the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), which says the state still has several weeks of warm summer temps ahead, which makes energy conservation even more important as air conditioners work overtime.

The ICC recommends several easy ways to reduce electricity use during peak demand hours, including contacting your local utility company to find out about peak-hour energy programs, and following these tips:
- Install a programmable thermostat
- Schedule air conditioner maintenance
- Replace HVAC filters
- Close curtains to block direct sunlight
- Use ceiling or box fans
- Seal air leaks around doors and windows
Assistance Available for Families Struggling with Bills
State officials also remind residents that financial help may be available for households struggling with higher summer utility costs.
Consumers can learn more through the ICC's Utility Energy Assistance resources, the Citizens' Utility Board Help Center, and payment assistance programs offered by Ameren Illinois and ComEd.
With extreme temperatures expected to continue, officials say taking preventative steps now can help Illinois families stay comfortable, conserve energy, and keep monthly utility bills under control for the remainder of the summer.
