Illinois Emergency Management is Preparing for Earthquakes on October 16
Illinois residents will join millions nationally on October 16 to prepare for an earthquake.
Practicing Earthquake Preparedness Across Illinois
According to a press release, millions across the country will participate in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill, a coordinated effort to help people practice what to do in the event of a real earthquake.
In Illinois, residents, schools, and businesses are encouraged to take part by following the simple safety instructions: Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
The annual event serves as a vital reminder that preparedness can save lives, especially in areas that may not experience frequent earthquakes.
Illinois' Seismic Risk and Readiness Efforts
"Illinois is positioned on two major seismic zones: the New Madrid and the Wabash Valley," said Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) Acting Director Ted Barger.
The IEMS-OHS is urging residents to visualize how they might respond in different settings, such as while driving, attending events, or even while sleeping. Practicing various scenarios helps ensure quick, calm reactions when seconds count.
