The Delicious Dairy Depot Is Open For Business
The Loves Park institution is open again just in time for the Fourth of July weekend.
I drive by the Dairy Depot on N. 2nd Street in Loves Park pretty much every day. I've noticed a lot of work being done to the store the last few weeks and hadn't heard when they were going to officially be open. The rumor was the Fourth of July weekend but I hadn't seen anything concrete. So I was ecstatic when I drove by Tuesday afternoon and saw the open sign on the iconic Dairy Depot sign.
They'll be open daily from 1-9:30PM. They haven't officially announced how late into the year they will be staying open. Traditionally, Dairy Depot's last weekend of business is Labor Day weekend but that might change since they opened almost 6 weeks after the usual opening day of Labor Day weekend.
They also haven't released any upcoming flavors yet but they did open the season with the traditional grasshopper flavor, so that's nice. I've publicly petitioned for this in the past but I would like to reiterate the fact that it would be great if they made sure that blue moon was in the mix as well sometime this year. I hope that's not asking too much.
A big thank you and an even bigger congratulations to the new owners of Dairy Depot, the Witts. They've been a part of the community for over 20 years and know what the local ice cream spot means to those who grew up with it. I went there with my grandpa 30 years ago and don't plan on stopping anytime soon.
I'll be there sometime this weekend with at least one dog in tow, I'm assuming that puppy cones are still on the menu.
