Officers from both the Rockford Police Patrol and the SCOPE unit were dispatched to the scene after reports indicated a violent altercation in the 2000 block of Vermont Street around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday (8/11).

According to a press release, when Rockford Police officers arrived on the scene they made contact with the primary suspect, James Watkins, who was subsequently taken into custody.

Following the arrest, SCOPE officers obtained a search warrant for the residence. The search, however, faced initial resistance but ultimately led to the discovery of two firearms and ammunition. Notably, one of the firearms was reported stolen from Rockford.

Following an investigation and evidence recovery which resulted in a significant escalation of charges against Watkins.
