Motorists in Rockford will have to find a new route beginning next week as a major roadway is set to close.
Road Closing as Reconstruction Project Continues
According to a press release from Rockford's City Engineer, a section of Whitman Street will close from Rockton Avenue to Kilburn Avenue for a reconstruction project that will keep the street closed for several months.
Traffic control and detour routes will be posted to safely guide motorists through the area while improvements are made as the closure will begin on Monday, August 12.

Residents who live in the area of the Whitman Street closure will continue to have access to their homes, along with mail, deliveries, trash, and emergency services will not have any interruptions during the road reconstruction.
Businesses in the area will also remain open during road construction.
This project is being funded by the City of Rockford's 1% Infrastructure Sales Tax and consists of pavement removal and replacement, driveway approach removal and replacement, curb and gutter removal and replacement, storm sewer upgrades, traffic signal upgrades, and other improvements.
This section of Whitman Street is set to be completed by the end of October, according to the press release.
