Routine hydrant flushing will be happening over the next couple of weeks, so residents should be aware of possible water discoloration in their homes.

City Expands Hydrant Flushing Operations in Rockford

According to a City of Rockford press release, the Public Works Department is continuing its unidirectional hydrant flushing project, which is focused on maintaining water quality and system reliability.

The next phase of the operation will happen between October 12 and October 25 and will focus on neighborhoods within the boundaries of Guilford Road to the north, Newburgh Road to the south, Alpine Road to the west, and the city limits to the east.

Streets Scheduled for Flushing This Week

Public Works crews will be working along Brixham Road, Tulip Lane, Centennial Trail, Shiloh Road, Tivoli Court, Garrett Lane, Bienterra Trail, Featherstone Road, and Sandra Lane.

The Public Works Department is advising residents that temporary water discoloration is possible during this process.

While not a health hazard, sediment stirred during flushing may contain iron, manganese, or lead, which can cause staining on laundry and fixtures, according to the press release.

What Residents Should Do

After flushing is completed in their area, residents are urged to run their water for one to two minutes and clean faucet aerator screens to remove any remaining sediment.
