Did you recently eat at a Mexican restaurant in the Stateline? You might have $500 coming your way.

Call me crazy, but if I left $500 behind at a restaurant, I would hightail it back to the place at lightning speed, once I discovered I left the wad of cash behind. Apparently, it's just me that feels that way. That being said, officials in DeKalb are looking for the person or persons who left behind $500 at Los Rancheros Restaurant in DeKalb.  Los Rancheros is located Sycamore Road in DeKalb, in front of Walmart.

Hats off to the honest person who found the money and turned it in. As a result of finding the cash, the finder has to turn over the cash to police, a public notice must be published, after a year, the person who found the money, gets to keep the cash.

If full, the public notice says:

PUBLIC NOTICE IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE TWENTY-THIRD JUDICIAL CIRCUIT DEKALB COUNTY, ILLINOIS NO. 17 - MR 101 ORDER IN THE MATTER OF ESTRAYS & LOST PROPERTY Pursuant to 765 ILCS 1020/27:Cash property in the amount of $500.00 was found in the Los Rancheros Restaurant on Sycamore Rd in DeKalb, IL. The property and name of the finder are at the DeKalb Police Department, 700 W. Lincoln Hwy in DeKalb, IL. If the owner does not claim such money and pay the finder's charges within one year from the time of advertisement, the ownership of the property shall vest in the finder. /s/ Thomas L. Doherty, Judge March 13, 2017 SEAL By /s/ Maureen A. Josh (Published in the Daily Chronicle, April 13, 20 & 27, 2017.)1389893

So you are probably asking the question, how do police determine who is the rightful owner? My guess, they person claiming the money would have to know:

  • When he or she lost the cash
  • The denomination(s) of the bills
  • What booth they were sitting in when the cash was lost at the restaurant

So, for those of you looking to earn a quick $500, think again, you better be ready to come up with the right answers.

We hope the person who actually lost the money is reunited with the funds or that the honest person who found the money, get to keep the cash, but nevertheless, the clock is ticking.
