As Illinois residents prepare for the busy spring moving season, the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) is reminding consumers to use caution when selecting a moving company.

In a press release, the ICC warns that handing over property to unlicensed movers can result in damaged goods, lost property, or unexpected costs.

Unlicensed Movers Pose Major Risks

According to the Illinois Movers' and Warehousemen's Association (IMAWA), more than 200 licensed and insured movers operate within Illinois.

Executive Director Matt Hart said that unlicensed movers are more likely to be uninsured, which means customers may be liable for injuries or damages during the move.

To protect Illinois consumers, ICC police routinely patrol for violations and will be increasing enforcement this spring.

ICC Expands Enforcement, Offers Consumer Guidance

Before signing with a mover, check the mover's ICC license, request a written estimate, discuss damage protections, and avoid any offers that seem too good to be true.

Residents moving to another state should confirm that their mover is licensed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
