It's another retail loss that will make book lovers very sad in Freeport and DeKalb. The final chapter has arrived for Book World. The retailer, on Tuesday, announced it will close all 45 of its stores nationwide, including eight in Illinois and 20 in Wisconsin.

Book World, with great fanfare, opened just over one year ago in DeKalb on E. Lincoln Highway and was just getting off the ground. Now, it will suddenly be shutting it's doors, along with every location around the U.S. in the next few months. The chain will start its liquidation sale on Thursday, November 2nd.

In addition to books, the retailer also sells toys, puzzles, and games.

It is estimated that 325 employees nationwide will lose their jobs. The company blames the closures on:

National shift in shopping habits from physical stores to online sites as a reason for the closures.

Book World has stores at two locations in Northern Illinois:

  • Freeport of S. West Ave
  • DeKalb on W. Lincoln Highway

After the store closes, DeKalb will be without a major bookstore. It was back in 2014 that Barnes & Noble closed. Prior to that, the town lost Borders and local favorite, the Junction Book Store.
