For years Winnebago County had passed out thousands of flags to veterans' organizations and widows of veterans. Due to lack of funding, in 1984, the county was forced to stop that service.

This did not stop Loves Park 89-Year-old WWII veteran Lee Hartsfield. He is on a mission to honor our fallen soldiers. WREX-TV reports that every year, Lee raises money on his own to purchase 4,300 flags just to give them to family members of fallen heroes for free.

Lee told WREX:

"It's for my dad, Larry Ohlson. He was an Air Force veteran. It's a great honor for our veterans, otherwise they might not even get flags. The purpose is that the flag are here for patriots to come and take one an put it on a veteran's grave. That's where they belong."
