Last fall, the Mayor’s Office of Domestic and Community Violence Prevention launched the innovative Barbershop Project, collaborating with local barbers and beauticians.

According to a press release from the City of Rockford, this project aims to leverage the unique position of these professionals to interrupt cycles of violence and bolster mental well-being in the community.

With the right training and resources, barbers and beauticians can become vital allies in recognizing and addressing domestic and sexual violence.

Empowering Community Leaders

In partnership with organizations like the Family Peace Center and NAMI of Northern Illinois, the Barbershop Project equips local barbers and beauticians with essential knowledge about mental health and available community resources.

Through targeted training, these professionals can respond effectively when clients share their struggles, creating a supportive environment that fosters healing and hope.

Shop Talk 101: Monthly Conversations for Change

To further enhance community engagement, the Barbershop Project also facilitates monthly discussions known as Shop Talk 101.

These sessions, held at locations such as Comprehensive Community Solutions, create safe spaces for open dialogue about mental health and trauma.

The next session, scheduled for September 23 at 5:30 p.m., will focus on "Building Hope After Incarceration." Led by trained NAMI staff with lived experience, these conversations are free and open to all families and community members.

Community Support and Resources

According to the press release, attendees of the sessions can look forward to resources from BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois promoting physical and mental health, along with complimentary food provided by Portillo’s.

This initiative not only seeks to destigmatize mental health issues but also hopes to build a supportive network where every voice matters.
