It may be time to start taking the side streets and backroads again, with Illinois unanimously approving its largest toll increase in state history.

Illinois Drivers About to Pay More

With a vote of 8-0, the Illinois Tollway Board approved higher toll rates and a new capital program on Wednesday (8/19), which will go into effect on January 1, 2027.

Passenger vehicle tolls will be increasing by approximately 45 cents per toll for I-PASS customers, a 57 percent increase. For non-I-PASS sticker users, there will be an increase of around 90 cents per toll, with commercial vehicle toll prices going up 30 percent.

This is the first increase in 14 years, with passenger toll rates having remained unchanged since 2012. Additional revenue is needed for the proposed Driving Connections program that runs through 2042.

More Toll Increases Already Planned

The higher rates won't necessarily stop in 2027, because tolls are scheduled to be adjusted every two years based on inflation beginning in 2029.

Illinois Tollway officials say the massive investment will address road conditions, congestion, bridges, and transportation infrastructure throughout its 12-county system.
