The initiative will create a time capsule of conversations reflecting life across the state. Organizers say it is one of the most ambitious efforts yet to ensure Illinois' role in the milestone celebration is inclusive and representative of its diverse communities.

The story of America isn’t complete without the story of Illinois. Our people's diverse perspectives, reflections, and personal narratives deserve to be shared and preserved for generations to come. I encourage Illinoisans of all backgrounds to tell their unique stories as the nation marks 250 years of history and resilience. -Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker

Recordings will be archived at the Library of Congress, giving Illinois residents a lasting place in the historical record.

Building on a National Legacy

StoryCorps was founded in 2003 and has recorded more than 700,000 conversations nationwide, creating one of the largest archives of human voices ever assembled. Leaders say "Illinois Voices 250" expands that mission on a statewide scale.
