But what about the bugs we look forward to seeing every summer because of the show they put on in the darkness?
When Will Fireflies Start Blinking Over The Skies of Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa?
According to the Farmers Almanac, the atmosphere will determine when "lightning bugs" will start to fly again, and their arrival changes every year.
The date when fireflies start showing up in your yard is determined by how much rainfall you've received and the air temperature, according to the Farmers Almanac.
When can we expect fireflies to arrive in northern Illinois?
The Farmers Almanac said when warmer Summer-like temperatures arrive, so do the lightning bugs. So if the heat shows up before June, expect to see them flying around earlier in May.
Even the number of times a lightning bug will make their butt "blink" changes with the weather.
If temperatures are warmer then you'll see fireflies blinking like a Christmas tree, but if there are cooler temperatures they may only light up every minute or so.
So, when will lightning bugs arrive this year in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa? Anywhere from the third week in May to the third week in June.
