How I Protect My Aging Parents From Illinois Scammers

Last year, I got one of those phone calls that every child dreads.

My dad had been convinced to mail over $3,000 in cash inside a box after someone claimed a tax return payment was incorrectly sent to his bank.

They even walked him through what to tell the bank teller when he asked to withdraw a large amount of cash so it wouldn't raise any flags. "Tell them you need cash for home improvements."

Thankfully, we were able to stop shipment on the package and get all the money back, but according to the fraud department at their bank, it's rare that you ever recover money sent in a scam.

The Scams Keep Coming

Since then, I've been added to my parents' bank accounts, so before any major cash withdrawal or transaction, I'll get a call to confirm what the money is being used for.

Another call from dad this week involved an entirely different scam involving home improvements. While talking to him this week, my dad said, "Looks like we're going to need a whole new roof on the house."

My scam radar immediately went off. I asked if he had called someone to come and look at the roof. "No." This was someone trying to get money, a deposit, or a promise work that will never be done.

Law Enforcement Says It's Becoming More Common

After contacting the fraud detectives at the Sheriff's Office, I learned that these home improvement scams have been common in the area, especially with elderly homeowners.

Another one involves a promise for discounted internet service or lower electric bills. All just to gain trust and get personal bank account information or cash payments.

For seniors, a knock at the door can quickly become a costly mistake.

Protecting the People Whoe Protected You

I'm going to install Ring doorbell cameras at their house that will alert my phone when anyone shows up at their door, and I've alerted the neighbors so they know someone is canvassing the area looking for vulnerable homeowners.

The truth is, parenting your parents isn't easy. Watching the people who once protected you become targets is emotionally exhausting, and scammers make it harder.
