
Only One Illinois City Ranked Among America’s Hardest-Working
So much for the blue-collar work ethic that so many of us in Illinois boast about.
I always thought that we were a hard-working bunch in the Land of Lincoln. If you want to believe this most recent study, we aren't, which is kind of a surprise.

WalletHub’s Metrics for Hardest-Working Cities in America
WalletHub put together a list of the hardest-working cities in America while using 11 different but work-related metrics that include:
- Hours Worked
- Employment Rate
- Unused Vacation Time
- Multiple Jobs
- Commute Time
While there are additional metrics, the key takeaway is that only one city in Illinois made it into the top 100.
Here are the top five hardest-working cities in America, according to WalletHub.
- Cheyenne, Wyoming
- Anchorage, Alaska
- Washington, D.C.
- Sioux Falls, South Dakota
- Irving, Texas
Top Five Hardest-Working Cities in the United States
WalletHub reports that Americans work nearly 1,800 hours a year more than workers in Japan, the U.K., and Germany.

The only city in the top 100 in Illinois is Chicago, which ranked a measly 94th, making it one of the "least hard-working" in America.

Normally, I might not challenge a study like this. However, when Illinois is nearly overlooked, I feel compelled to respond.
If you want cities where people work hard without burning out, perhaps the trait WalletHub overlooked, Illinois offers a great example.
