A new WalletHub study looked at happiness across America, and Illinois isn't exactly high up on the list. Out of all 50 states in the country, we ranked 22nd. Not exactly sad, but not thrilled either. We're just collectively, uh, fine.

Researchers examined every state using 30 different factors tied to each person's well-being, including emotional health, work-life balance, income growth, and the level of connection people feel to their communities. How Illinois Compares to the Midwest

If you're wondering how Wisconsin did, they scored higher than us, coming in at number 20, while Iowa fared better, ranking 17. Minnesota landed just outside the top 10 at 11. I wonder if lake life, less traffic, and all that cheese really do something to lighten the mood?

If you're looking for a silver lining, we beat Indiana (34) and Michigan (35), so at least we're happier than those states. It's a small win, but I'll take it.

Who's Actually Happy?

The happiest states in the United States this year are Hawaii, Maryland, and Nebraska. They scored highly in terms of emotional well-being, strong communities, and work-life balance.

The Real Silver Lining

Middle of the road might sound boring, but maybe it's not the worst place to be. In Illinois, we have great food, fun sports teams, and plenty of fun things to do in the Land of Lincoln. Life could be worse, and according to some of these rankings, in a lot of states, it is.
