When temperatures are below freezing in the Stateline area, these artists take advantage of the conditions by showing off their skills with snow.

Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition Returns to Sinnissippi Park

The Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition began in 1987 when two local businessmen brought an idea to Rockford that they discovered on a snowmobiling trip in northern Wisconsin.

Snow blocks are set up throughout Sinnissippi Park for two divisions to compete in, High School and State participants. Winners from this competition go on to represent Illinois in the national snow sculpting competition at Winterfest in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin that runs from January 29 through February 2.

Past creations have included everything from towering animals to abstract pieces, with this year's sculptures featuring a Willie Nelson creation and snow sculptures that feature Illinois throughout the seasons.
