Frost may be covering the grass as I write this, but it is supposed to get up to 50 some degrees today, so in honor of the mild December weather, the Rockford Park District is giving golfers a bittersweet treat today.

By now you know that Elliot Golf Course is one of the Rockford Park District attractions that ended up on the chopping block in their effort to consolidate interests and balance the budget.

Now it's time for the bittersweet news; before the Rockford Park District officially kisses Elliot Golf Course goodbye, they are giving golfers one last chance to play the course for FREE today. The RPD press release says;

Thursday, December 10, 2020, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can play Elliot Golf Course for free. Flag sticks are back in. No tee time needed. No carts are out. Clubhouse will remain closed. Please adhere to the State of Illinois’ COVID-19 Tier 3 Resurgence Mitigation requirements in place while participating in outdoor recreation; these include not gathering in groups of 10 or more, keeping social distancing, and wearing a face mask. Golfers must check in at the starter desk before playing.

I may not be a golfer, but I am hoping this isn't a true goodbye for the golf course on Lyford Rd., maybe just a delayed transition to a new owner (I'm looking at you, Hard Rock). Either way, make sure you dig out those clubs and bid Elliot a fond farewell today!
