
Blizzard-Like Snow Squalls, Extreme Cold Threaten Rockford and Chicago
Portions of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin could have blizzard-like conditions tonight (Wednesday) ahead of brutally cold temperatures.
Winter Weather Advisory Issued as Arctic Front Arrives
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory across portions of northern Illinois as a strong arctic cold front moves through tonight, with a chance of scattered snow showers.

There is a potential for intense snow squalls that may briefly create blizzard conditions through midnight on Wednesday (1/21), reducing visibility to under a half mile.
Snow Squalls and Dangerous Travel Conditions
The most intense snow showers could produce quick accumulations of up to one inch, combined with strong wind gusts over 40 mph, blowing and drifting snow is expected, especially in exposed areas.
Motorists are being urged to prepare for rapidly changing road conditions, low visibility, and slick surfaces during the evening commute on Wednesday.
Extreme Cold Watch Follows the Storm
After the snow exits, dangerously cold Arctic air will settle in to the Rockford and Chicagoland area, with an Extreme Cold Watch in effect from late Thursday night (1/22) through Friday morning (1/23).
Wind chills could plunge as low as 35 below zero, creating a serious risk for frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
An Extreme Cold Warning will be in effect in Wisconsin from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
Safety and Preparedness Urged
The National Weather Service is urging residents in the advisory area to dress in layers, protect exposed skin, safeguard water pipes, keep pets indoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors and family members.
Portable heaters should be used safely, and generators and grills should never be operated indoors.
