The name of a 22-year-old who was killed in a Winnebago County crash on Thursday (8/21) has been revealed.

Fatal Crash on West Lane Road

According to a press release from the Winnebago County Coroner's Office, the crash happened shortly before 5:15 pm on Thursday on West Lane Road east of Mitchell Road.

A preliminary investigation reports that a vehicle was traveling westbound when the driver reportedly lost control, struck a curb, and left the roadway.

The vehicle then rolled several times before coming to rest, according to the press release.

Emergency Response and Pronouncement

Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputies, the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department, and MD-1 responded to the crash site, and when they arrived, the first responders located a passenger in the vehicle unresponsive.

Despite immediate medical efforts, it was determined that the individual was beyond resuscitation and was pronounced deceased at 5:55 pm on the scene.

The Winnebago County Coroner has identified the victim of the crash as 22-year-old Nycholas Spears of Rockford, Illinois, who was the passenger in the vehicle.

Ongoing Investigation

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday (8/25) to determine the exact cause of death as the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

No additional details about the driver of the vehicle or possible contributing factors have been released.
