Illinois Taxpayers Encouraged to File Early for Fast Refunds
Don't wait until the middle of April if you want to get your refund quickly. According to the IDOR, taxpayers should file as soon as possible and opt for direct deposit to ensure the quickest refund processing.
According to the Illinois Department of Revenue press release, taxpayers who file an error-free return electronically can expect their direct deposit refund within approximately four weeks.
Filing Options and Deadline
Illinois taxpayers have several filing options, including using tax preparation software, working with a tax professional, or completing the paper Form IL-1040.

The deadline to file your 2024 taxes is April 15, 2025, however, a 6-month extension can be filed. Any taxes owed must still be paid by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest even with an extension.
Assistance for Taxpayers
Tax-related inquiries can be directed to IDOR’s taxpayer assistance lines at 1-800-732-8866 or 217-782-3336.
