It always pays to be a kind-hearted person, as one very surprised woman from New Jersey discovered when she loaned a stranger a few bucks to pay for his snacks at a local convenience store.

That stranger turned out to be none other than Keith Urban, who posed with substitute schoolteacher Ruth Reed for a selfie after she spotted him the cash.

According to NorthJersey.com, Urban stopped at a Wawa in Medford, N.J. on Friday before his show at Camden’s BB&T Pavilion. Apparently short on cash, he happened to ask one of his companions for $5. Reed, who was also shopping there, overheard the conversation and stepped in to pay for his items.

As it turns out, Reed didn't recognize Urban. In fact, she thought he looked like someone who needed a little help. When he told her who he was, she said she thought he was "yanking my chain."

"I argued with him that he was not Keith Urban," she said—and even went so far as to ask where his wife, Nicole Kidman, was!

Urban's bodyguard ultimately confirmed the singer's identity, and Reed "went to pieces"...but revived herself sufficiently to pose for a photo with the superstar, which was posted on Facebook to the delight of the local community..

Reed says she's made a habit of exercising such kind gestures on regular basis—she's just not used to them turning out to be celebs. "Three years ago, I made a resolution to treat somebody at Wawa once a week," she explained. "I have done that ever since. It is the best. I would encourage everybody to do it because it makes you feel good about you."

Urban is currently on tour with Kelsea Ballerini and will be joining NBC's The Voice in September as an advisor during the season's Battle Rounds.
