The Roscoe Middle School sixth-grader Avani Joshi is a mini genius. Her new official title is the region's newest spelling bee champ!

Avani won first place in the 2019 Boone-Winnebago Regional Spelling Bee Tuesday night by correctly spelling “misogynist". After taking fourth place last year, this year's win meant even more. Her mother was so nervous last year she couldn't even go. However, this year Avani forced her mother to come after they had spent weeks practicing together.

Check out the winning photos of Avani and her trophy here.

As the first place finisher, Avani Joshi won an all-expenses paid trip to Washington to compete in the National Spelling Bee, a trophy, a $400 gift card, the Samuel Louis Sugarman Award, a one-year subscription to Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online and a one-year subscription to Britannica Online Premium.

But Avani's skills don't stop at spelling bees. According to RRSTAR, she also -

... will compete in this weekend’s regional Science Olympiad in Rockford and next week at the National Geographic GeoBee Illinois in Normal before she starts prepping for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

We can't wait to follow along Avani's journey and support all of her successes.
