With an increase in accidents and residents complaints, the Rockford Police are cracking down on speeders along E. State Street.

Just this week on Thursday one speeder was clocked at going 52, on State near Shaw Street, by Officer Stacey Beaman with the radar gun.

Thursday was a pretty busy day for Officer Beaman who happened to write four speeding tickets inside of thirty minutes.

Sgt. David Nicosia told mystateline.com:

We're aware that there is speeding," "Obviously, the numbers show there is speeding. We do put resources there and our main goal is compliance."

Out of the drivers that were pulled over on Thursday, two were pulled over for going just two miles an hour below what police would consider "reckless driving" speeds. If you're caught going 26 mph over the posted speed limit is considered a Class A misdemeanor and could cost the driver up to $2,500 and a year in jail.

Because State Street is one of the busiest roads in Rockford, drivers should be extra cautious when traveling it, per Sgt. Nicosia.

It's part of residential, it feeds into businesses, it feeds from I-90 to downtown, so there are drivers going every which way, and State Street is a big one for that,"

One resident who lives on the area of State from 9th St. to Fairview, Guy Spinello, says that stretch is a danger for other drivers along with residents:

They hit that traffic signal at Fairview and then they just really hit it, and it's not unusual to see speeds of 50 to 55 miles per hour in that whole area, from Fairview to Swedish American Hospital,"

Since it is Memorial Day weekend and the start of summer, expect more officers out on the lookout for speeders.

Sgt. Nicosia wants Rockford drivers to know this bit of info:

A good piece of advice is: to stop speeding before it stops you
