A man working at a Rockford grocery store was injured when he tried to stop an attempted robbery on Wednesday morning.

The Rockford Police Department released details about an incident that reportedly took place on Wednesday morning (6/12) at Valli Produce located at 5880 E. State Street.

According to the press release, Rockford PD officers responded to reports of "a male subject armed with a knife" at the State Street store and were able to positively identify the man as Reginald Wallace.

Wallace had attempted to steal a bottle of liquor from the Valli Produce store when staff confronted him. He then began "swinging the knife while leaving the store and cut an employee who was trying to intervene."

When officers arrived on the scene shortly after, they were able to locate Wallace who was walking away from the Valli Produce store, and took them into custody. According to the press release, the individuals are currently housed in the Winnebago County Jail.

The Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office has approved the following charges against 34-year-old Reginald Wallace of Rockford:

  • Armed Robbery
  • Aggravated Battery
  • Aggravated Assault

The Rockford Police Department said these charges are "merely accusations and all individuals are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law."
