Rockford Fire Department Urges Vigilance as Holiday Fire Risks Rise Across Illinois
An urgent message from the Rockford Fire Department to stay vigilant during the holidays, as cooking, decorations, and dry trees significantly increase the fire risk.
Cooking Remains the Leading Cause of Holiday Fires
As famalies across the Stateline area prepare for festive gatherings, the Rockford Fire Department is reminding residents to take extra precautions with the seasonal spike in fire hazards.
With roughly 50 percent of residential structure fires originating from cooking, officials warn that a moment of distraction can quickly turn into a dangerous situation.

In the press release, Rockford Fire stresses that cooking should never be left unattended, and the department recommends using timers or remote thermometers.
RFD also advises thoroughly thawing turkeys before deep-frying and keeping smokers at least 10 feet away from combustible materials. A working fire extinguisher and properly maintained appliances can significantly reduce the risk of flare-ups.
Decorations and Trees Add to Seasonal Dangers
Holiday decor also plays a big role in winter fire risks, according to the report, so Rockford Fire is advising the use of LED lights, which burn cooler and reduce electrical strain.
All decorations should be placed on a timer to avoid overnight power draw, and overloaded power outlets should be avoided entirely.

Dry Christmas trees remain one of the most dangerous holiday hazards, igniting easily and burning rapidly. Residents are urged to keep trees well-watered and to avoid leaving candles lit without supervision.
Battery-powered candles and diffusers offer safer options, according to Rockford Fire.
Fire Officials Provide Safety Support
The department also encourages monthly smoke detector tests and upgrading to 10-year sealed lithium battery alarms.
