It's hard to imagine alcohol being illegal in 2026. That so many of these places still thrive means you should try them yourself.
On the Take Out list are Pete's Tavern, the oldest continuously operating bar in NYC, and McGillin's Olde Ale House, which has been open in Philadelphia since 1860.
While there are plenty of great places on that list, there's only one real place to think when it comes to bars like this, and way up at the top of the best is The Green Mill. Located in Chicago at 4802 Broadway, this legendary joint has been open since 1907.
