Illinois Drivers License Facilities To Remain Closed Until 2021
So, you haven't been able to renew your driver's license and it is nearing an expiration date. Well, it turns out you don't have to stress about it.
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that driver services facilities will remain closed for in-person transactions until January 5th, 2021. Also, driver's licenses and expirations have been extended until June 1st of next year.
This COVID-19 pandemic has been a giant pain in the butt for most aspects of our lives, but there have been a few examples of a silver-lining, with one being the fact that you haven't had to spend much time in The Illinois Secretary of State's Office (or DMV, depending on what you call the drivers license facilities).
In a news release, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White explains:
As the health and safety of employees and the public are paramount, we decided to extend the closure of driver services facilities due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, face-to-face transactions potentially increase the further spread of the virus, and protecting the health and safety of our residents is my top priority.
Officials with the Secretary of State's Office said that some facilities will be open for new drivers only. Eighteen commercial driver's license facilities will remain open for written and road exams.
If you simply need a license plate sticker, there will still be 7 statewide facilities that will continue offering drive-thru services for license plate sticker transactions only. The Secretary of State's office says that these facilities were selected due to the configuration of the buildings that allowed for drive-through transactions.
Online services for Illinois residents have been expanded at cyberdriveillinois.com, and include:
- Renewing a license plate sticker;
- Renewing a valid driver's license for qualifying drivers;
- Renewing a valid ID card for those age 22-64 (seniors 65 and older have free, non-expiring IDs);
- Obtaining a driver record abstract;
- Filing business services documents, such as incorporations and annual reports
