Illinois Governor Announces Tax Relief for California Wildfire Victims
The Illinois Department of Revenue has announced tax relief for individuals and businesses devastated by the wildfires in southern California.
Illinois Offers Tax Relief for Californians Affected by 2025 Wildfires
According to a press release from the IDR, taxpayers impacted by fires that erupted on January 7, 2025 will have until October 15, 2025, to file various state individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.
Residents who live or have businesses in the affected areas won't need to worry about incurring penalties and interest on their tax deadlines until October. This additional time will allow them to gather essential paperwork without added stress. -Illinois Governor JB Pritzker
The extended deadlines cover various tax types, including quarterly estimated taxes, payroll and excise taxes, and partnership and corporate returns.
Flexible Filing Options
The Illinois Department of Revenue will waive penalties for payroll and excise tax payments due between January 7 and February 7, 2025, as long as they are submitted by February 7.
Affected taxpayers should mark all documents and communication with “2025 California Wildfires” to ensure proper processing with the IDR.
Relief for Future-Designated Areas
Tax relief will also extend to other counties where FEMA may declare disaster areas, according to the press release.

Supporting Recovery Efforts
“My administration is committed to helping Californians recover from the devastation caused by these wildfires,” said Governor Pritzker.
By postponing the tax deadlines, Illinois hopes to reduce the financial strain on impacted communities and individuals as they begin to rebuild their lives.
