Governor Pritzker Has Ordered U.S. Flags Be Lowered Later This Month

After flags across Illinois and the U.S. were lowered to honor the loss of country music icon Dolly Parton last week, they've returned to full staff. But Governor Pritzker has just ordered them lowered again later this month.

Why Illinois Flags Will Fly Half-Staff

The Illinois Governor has directed all persons and entities covered by the Illinois Flag Display Act to lower both U.S. and state flags to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on September 11, 2026.

Residents will see all flags lowered to observe Patriot Day, a day of remembrance for the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks, 25 years ago this month.

Patriot Day Honors Those Lost on 9/11

Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and aboard the four hijacked aircraft in 2001.

The commemoration also honors the first responders who made an incredible sacrifice during that day.

When Are Flags Ordered to Half-Staff

The Illinois Flag Display Act established procedures for lowering flags following the deaths of Illinois residents killed in certain military and public-service roles, including members of the armed forces, law enforcement, fire service and EMS.

State law requires the Governor to issue an official notice in those circumstances, but for Patriot Day, the September 11 directive applies to the day's solemn observance.
