So apparently over a foot of snow isn't enough. Now we're expected to see an 'arctic blast'. What does that mean? It's going to be COLD. Not normal cold, dangerously cold. Since this isn't your average cold winter day, you'll need to take some precautions around your home.

When it gets this cold you've got to pay special attention to your pipes. Here are steps you can take to make sure your pipes don't freeze and if they do freeze how to fix it -

  • Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses
  • Insulate pipes or faucets in unheated areas or crawlspaces
  • Seal off access doors, air vents and cracks
  • If you will not be home do not set your thermostat lower than 55 degrees
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors so warm air can circulate around plumbing
  • Let hot and cold water drip from the faucet at a trickle
  • Check skirting around mobile homes

If your pipes happen to freeze, you should hire a plumber to thaw them, but if you choose to do it yourself -

  • Do not use a blowtorch or any open flame device
  • Following devices can be used - heating pad, blow dryer, space heater, hot water soaked towels
  • Thaw pipes slowly and evenly
  • Leave the main valve open and faucets running
