Have you ever wondered how and why Groundhog Day became a thing in the United States? The answer might surprise you.

Groundhog Day in Illinois

If you've lived in Illinois for more than a day, especially in the northern part of the state, you probably know that Groundhog Day is a pretty big deal here, primarily thanks to the movie 'Groundhog Day' starring Bill Murray that was filmed in Woodstock, Illinois.

To me, Groundhog Day is a pleasant reminder that we have made it to the halfway point of winter, but I often wonder how trusting a chunky rodent with our weather predictions became a thing in the first place?

The History of Groundhog Day

In the United States, Groundhog Day was first celebrated in Pennsylvania, home of Punxsutawney Phil, but the tradition actually has roots in Germany and coincides very closely with the Christian holiday Candlemas.

Groundhog.org says:

The celebration started in Christianity as the day, (February 2nd), when Christians would take their candles to the church to have them blessed. This, they felt, would bring blessings to their household for the remaining winter.

As time rolled on the day evolved into another form. The following English folk song highlights the transition to weather prognostication.

If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Come, Winter, have another flight;
If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
Go Winter, and come not again.

Essentially, an animal being used to prognosticate the weather didn't start until the Candlemas tradition was introduced in Germany and it evolved into if an animal saw its shadow, winter would drag on.

When German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania in the 1800s, they brought that belief with them, but they swapped out European animals for a groundhog.

2026 Groundhog Predictions

In case you haven't heard yet, Groundhog Day predictions have varied all across the nation for 2026. The original "Seer of Seers", Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shadow...

And Woodstock Willie, did not...

I'm still on the fence of believing weather predictions from an animal, but if I must choose one to roll with, it will most definitely be Woodstock Willie's prediction on an early Spring!
