I have termed 2020, The Year of Suck.

Humanity has been dealt some pretty terrible blows in the last few months, and as a parent, I am struggling.

I struggled with how to explain the COVID-19 pandemic to my girls who are 6 and 4. How do I make them understand a situation that I don't fully understand and have never experienced before? How do I calm their fears and answer their questions about why they can't hug their grandparents, play with their friends or go to school?

Somehow we made it through those tough conversations, and now we are being thrown a new one that I have no idea how to start with my girls. Honestly, my husband and I have decided to avoid talking about what is happening in our world around them, and we have not tried to explain any of it to them. Quite frankly, they are way too young to understand, and we just want to shelter them from the hate in the world as long as possible. I do feel we won't be able to do that for long though, and thankfully there's a new special airing on CNN this Saturday that will help relieve some of a parent's burden bracing the subject of racism. It's called "Coming Together: Standing Up to Racism. A CNN/Sesame Street Town Hall for Kids and Families" and will air on June 6th starting at 9 a.m. CT on CNN.

According to CNN.com;

The show will talk to kids about racism, the recent nationwide protests, embracing diversity and being more empathetic and understanding.
Big Bird will join CNN commentator Van Jones and CNN anchor and national correspondent Erica Hill to moderate the event. They will be joined by "Sesame Street" characters -- including Elmo, Abby Cadabby and Rosita -- and other experts answering questions submitted by families.
Let's face it, kids love to Elmo. If Elmo tells them to love everybody and treat everyone equally, they are bound to listen, right? Let's hope so, because this mama is WORN OUT!
