The Chicago based Ferrara candy company announced that it has been the subject of a ransomware attack at probably the absolute worst time for a candy company, less than 2 weeks before Halloween.

The roster of candies under the Ferrara label include:

  • Everlasting Gobstoppers
  • Lemonheads
  • Now and Later
  • Nerds
  • SweeTarts
  • Laffy Taffy
  • Red Hots
  • Pixy Stix
  • Atomic Fireballs
  • Boston Baked Beans

(more on this "list" later)

TheHill - This hack, which was disclosed Tuesday, was first spotted at Ferrara on Oct. 9 when the hackers encrypted the company's computer system and demanded a payment

"We immediately responded to secure all systems and commence an investigation into the nature and scope of this incident," Ferrara said.

The company added that they have been able to resume production at "select facilities" but their shipping is "near capacity." To which I would reply, do we even want them to be full strength for this Halloween?

There are a lot of spicy hot takes on the internet when it comes to Halloween candy. Let me guess, you don't like candy corn either. I did however come across one of the best opinions on Halloween candy I've ever seen earlier today. This article from The Takeout from Danny Palumbo posits that all Halloween candy sucks. Not that the candy themselves suck, but the entire Halloween candy conglomerate. He makes the wonderful point that Easter is filled with special Easter candy. Cadburry Eggs, Robin eggs, chocolate bunnies, etc. All Halloween is throwing at you is mini versions of regular candy bars.

And he's right.

Where are the specialty candies of Halloween? Is "Big Halloween" just lazy? They know we're buying bags of candy on Halloween regardless of what they put out there. They knew they had to sweeten the pot a little on Easter, so they roll out the crème-filled eggs?

Also, I just heard about "Boston Baked Beans" when I typed them for the first time writing this post. Had to look them up.

Candy peanuts? Hey Ferrera, don't hurt yourselves trying to get these out to the public. I think we'll be just fine without them.
