Beef-a-Roo Fandom

If you grew up in Rockford like I did, Beef-a-Roo isn’t just a place to grab a meal. It’s a core memory.

I still remember my first trip to Beef-a-Roo when I was in middle school. We stopped there after spending the afternoon at the barn my friend boarded her horses at, and all it took was one bite of cheddar fries to know I had just fallen in love.

Fast forward several decades, and more cheddar fries and beef and cheddars than I can possibly count, my two daughters have become big Beef-a-Roo fans too...but something has felt a little off lately.

Beef-a-Roo Expansion

I'm not going to lie, when I first heard the franchising rights to Beef-a-Roo were sold back in 2021, I was a little bummed.

Since the chain began expanding beyond Rockford, things have felt different. Not bad, exactly, just not quite ours anymore.

Many people in the Rockford area feel the food quality and customer service has changed, and then the shocking news started coming.

There was the sudden closure of all Rockford locations on April 27, 2026:

And then reports of missing fundraising money started to circulate:

Beef-a-Roo has been very transparent about their recent difficulties and said accounting issues were to blame, but the company is now taking a few more steps to get back into the Rockford community's good graces.

"Beef-a-Roo Loves Rockford" Campaign

Beef-a-Roo is trying to reconnect with the community that built it by launching a new “Beef-a-Roo Loves Rockford" campaign, which includes donating money directly to Rockford Public Schools and the Harlem School District.

An article from the Rockford Register Star says a press release from Jeremy Wise, vice president of Beef-a-Roo says:

This campaign is our way of saying thank you — to the families, schools, and neighborhoods that have made Beef-a-Roo what it is today. We want to continue being a brand the community knows, trusts, and loves.

The press release also said that the company will be making good on fundraiser payments that have not been received as well as donating $1,000 to both RPS 205 and the Harlem School District.

Look, I’m not ready to give up on Beef-a-Roo. Not after decades of memories and, let’s be real, some of the best cheese fries in the Midwest. But like a lot of locals, I'll be watching closely.
