The next time you make a visit to Summerfield Zoo in Belvidere you'll see their new furry addition. A baby spotted hyena has been added to the menagerie of animals.

Summerfield Zoo told WREX that the baby spotted hyena is named Bonzai and they will be holding a special celebration next weekend, May 20th -21st.

Bonzai once he's older is going to be part of their hyena breeding program as a mate for the zoo's female hyena, Shenzee.

The spotted hyena, also known as the laughing hyena, is from the Sub-Saharan Africa and their population has been declining from habitat loss. Programs like the one at Summerfield Zoo is helping to grow and protect the species while providing educational resource.
