State Park in Illinois Celebrates 75 Years of Natural Beauty at Ferne Clyffe
When Illinois acquired Ferne Clyffe for a state park in 1949, it was already celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and lush, scenic views.
Back then, visitors journeyed from Goreville by train for just 10 cents, and the park’s Hawk’s Cave shelter bluff even hosted Sunday church services, complete with an organ transported weekly down an old access road.

Though the train no longer runs and the organ’s music has faded, the park’s charm remains as strong as ever.
A Milestone Celebration on September 21
This year, Ferne Clyffe State Park will celebrate 75 years of natural splendor with a public event on Saturday, September 21.
Located on Illinois 37, just south of Goreville, the park will host a variety of activities from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., including guided hikes, rock-climbing demonstrations, and free youth fishing.
According to a press release from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, a special ceremony with guest speakers will take place at 11 a.m. in the Buck Creek picnic area.
Attendees can purchase commemorative anniversary coins and enjoy food provided by the Goreville High School Beta Club, and all of the day’s festivities are free and open to the public.
A Haven for Outdoor Enthusiasts
Covering 2,470 acres, Ferne Clyffe State Park is renowned for its diverse offerings.
Named after the abundant ferns that dot the landscape, the park features unique rock formations, including approximately 150 climbing routes across eight walls—an attraction unmatched in Illinois state parks.
For those who prefer camping, there are 59 Class A campsites, 21 Class C sites, and specialized areas for equestrians and groups.
Fun for All Ages
In addition to rock climbing and camping, visitors can enjoy three picnic shelters, four playgrounds, and bank fishing for a variety of fish species.
Hiking, wildlife watching, and the park’s picturesque views add to its appeal. Easily accessible from Interstate 57 and Interstate 24, Ferne Clyffe remains a treasured destination for more than 325,000 nature lovers each year.
