It's not even built yet, but anticipation continues to grow as we are about a year away from the official opening of Sportscore on the Rock.

WIFR-TV is reporting that the Amateur Athletic Union 6th Grade Girls Basketball National Championships is headed to Rockford in 2018. The announcement was made Monday night at Rockford's City council meeting by  RACVB President John Groh.

The four to five day tournament will consist of 100 teams who will all compete. Groh expects the  tournament to draw 3,600 people. He estimates that the Rockford area economy will take in about $750,000 in revenue.

Groh told WIFR:

The AAU has confidence, they've been to town, they've toured the facility, they've seen the plans and they're excited about it. That excitement is going to trickle out to other organizations as we make this announcement. In the coming weeks and months, we'll have additional announcements about tournaments that are choosing Rockford and saying yes to downtown

When completed, Sportscore on the Rock will host a number of different events including:

  • Basketball
  • Volleyball
  • Wrestling

The venue, operated by the Rockford Park District,  is hoping to open in summer of 2016. The facility will be operated by the Rockford Park District
