A new study just revealed the grosses states. Why you might ask? Well I ask you this - Why not? Sure we could find out the cleanest state, but what fun is that?

So, how do Illinois and Wisconsin rank compared to the rest of the country? Well, spoiler alert, Illinois is less gross than Wisconsin. But let's take a look at the whole map first.

So ... East Coast ... you good? That seems to be where the grosses states are. So what do they mean by "gross"? Zippia details -

We started with undisputed metrics of gross-ery.

  • Dirty air
  • Trash, or the percentage of each state that is landfill
  • Spread of illness like the flu

To measure the dirtiness of the air, we referred Air Filters Delivered thorough ranking on air quality.

For the trash rating, we simply used the EPA’s data on the percentage of each state’s land that is taken up by landfills.

So what states made the top 10?

  1. Virginia
  2. South Carolina
  3. North Carolina
  4. Pennsylvania
  5. Texas
  6. New Jersey
  7. Connecticut
  8. Georgia
  9. Delaware
  10. New York

So where did Illinois and Wisconsin rank?  Illinois ranked at #23. Wisconsin is slightly more gross, they actually made it in the top 20! They ranked #14.

According to Zippia, they also analyzed -

We then looked at the CDC’s ranking on spread of illness in each state like the flu. Because sneezing, coughing, and spreading diseases is pretty gross.

From there, we decided to add some cultural factors that are a bit…well, gross. AKA Google search interest in:

  • Mayo recipes
  • Croc wearing

Sorry Mayo lovers and Croc wearers. A line had to be drawn somewhere.

Hey, I wear Crocs, and I eat Mayo. Guess that means I'm gross. You can check out the full study here.
