Rockford Motorists Should Be Alert for Roundabout Changes on Monday
Starting Monday, September 23rd, the City of Rockford will begin removing traffic control barrels at the roundabout located at Main Street (Illinois Route 2) and Auburn Street.
Traffic Control Barrels Removed for Improved Navigation
According to the press release, this significant change aims to improve the navigation of emergency vehicles while maintaining the roundabout’s single-lane operation.

Since its opening in 2013, the multi-lane roundabout has experienced frequent accidents—often resulting from driver error due to failure to yield and improper lane usage.

The pilot program, which initially reduced the roundabout to one lane, recorded a remarkable 50% decrease in accidents over the first three months, with no injury-related incidents reported.
With the support of the Illinois Department of Transportation, the city's ongoing evaluation aims to determine if this trend continues, enhancing overall safety for all road users.
Expect Changes in Traffic Flow
As drivers navigate the newly streamlined roundabout, they are reminded to obey roadway striping and remain cautious.
While the one-lane design is intended to improve safety, longer delays may occur at peak times. The city is committed to monitoring the intersection closely, ensuring a balance between efficiency and safety as the pilot program unfolds.
