This Illinois Road Plagued by Potholes Gets Long-Awaited Upgrade

Somebody in Rockford must have finally gotten tired of hearing that our city is famous for its potholes, because there's asphalt going down all over town.

When I first moved here, I was gifted a piece of asphalt from an actual Rockford pothole, so I just assumed that was part of our identity.

But that is changing day by day as more orange traffic barrels pop up around the Screw City, and more roads are becoming nice and smooth.

West Riverside Boulevard Gets Long-Awaited Upgrade

According to a press release from the City of Rockford, the first of four major arterial roadway projects has been completed.

The newly paved stretch of West Riverside Boulevard opened earlier this month, and it's pretty nice not having to do that swerve to avoid craters anymore.

The resurfacing covers the section between Central Avenue and Packard Parkway, as well as Rockton Avenue to Latham Street, an area plagued by nearly 500 pothole repair requests in 2024 alone.

More Key Roads Under Construction

Work is underway on the remaining projects, and you'll see the crews and cones down Alpine Road, Mulford Road, and Spring Creek Road through Labor Day, when completion is expected on those corridors.

Nearly 80,000 vehicles use these roadways daily, and these resurfacing efforts will improve safety and provide much smoother travel.

According to the City of Rockford press release, the funding for these projects was provided by the city's 2023 General Fund Budget Surplus, which shows that taxpayer dollars are being reinvested directly into infrastructure improvements.

I'm kind of getting used to the potholes on South Alpine Road, so I know exactly where the big ones are coming up to strategically swerve around them. But soon, that will all be gone.
