The public has been asking for it to be returned, since the Rockford Public library took it away seven year ago.

Expanded library hours will return on January 1st. The Rockford Public library has announced they will add 48 additional hours to it's weekly operating schedule. The downtown location on 214 N. Church Street may even start the new hours earlier than January 1st.

Presently, none of the branches of the Rockford library have morning hours Sunday through Thursday. In fact, the library was only open before noon on Fridays and Saturdays.

Library CEO Lynn Staybrook told the Rockford Register Star that to not be open in the morning was "heartbreaking." She said that morning hours are important to

  • seniors
  • moms with young children
  • home schooled families
  • Job seekers

Another positive change will be that all library branches will be open Mondays and Saturdays.
