A police van was involved in a collision in the early morning hours on Thursday, leading to a chase, and the arrest of two individuals.

Early Morning Collision Involving Police Van

At approximately 1:05 am on Thursday (2/27), a Rockford Police Squadrol van was struck at the South 5th Street and First Avenue intersection.

According to the press release, the RPD van was occupied by 2 Rockford Police Officers when it was hit on the driver's side, causing the van to flip onto its side.

Suspects Apprehended Nearby

Following the crash, two individuals jumped out of the suspect vehicle and fled.

Officers quickly located one of the suspects hiding in the area with assistance from an RPD K-9 unit, and he was identified as 40-year-old Steve Schorer of Rockford.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 22-year-old Paige Russo of Rockford, who was apprehended nearly a short time later.

Charges Filed Against Schorer and Russo

After reviewing the incident, the following charges were authorized by the Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office:

Steve Schorer, 40, Rockford

  • Unlawful Possession of a Weapon

Paige Russo, 22, Rockford

  • Failure to Remain at the Scene of an Accident
  • Driving Under the Influence of Drugs
  • Various Traffic Offenses

Both Schorer and Russo were issued Notices to Appear and then released, according to the Rockford Police press release. Charges against both are merely accusations, and they are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
