A 22-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Rockford's west side early Wednesday morning (6/17), according to the Winnebago County Coroner's Office.

Preliminary Findings Point to High-Speed Crash

Authorities said the Coroner's Office was notified of the fatal crash around 1:30 am on June 17, 2026, in the 600 block of Harrison Avenue.

According to the Coroner's press release, the victim has been identified as 22-year-old Drevin Tavernie of Rockford.

Investigators say the preliminary evidence indicates Tavernie was traveling westbound on Harrison Avenue around 1:15 am when he lost control of his vehicle while traveling at a high rate of speed.

First Responders Found Driver Unresponsive

According to the report, the vehicle reportedly left the roadway and crashed into a building. Officials said the vehicle was only occupied by Tavernie at the time of the crash.

Officers from the Rockford Police Department and the Rockford Fire Department arrived on the scene and found Tavernie unresponsive in the roadway. Despite emergency response efforts, he was determined to be beyond resuscitation.

The Winnebago County Coroner's Office staff pronounced him deceased at 3:05 am, according to the press release.

Autopsy Results Revealed

An autopsy has since been completed, and the Coroner's Office has determined that Tavernie died from blunt trauma to the head sustained in the crash.

Authorities have not released any further details regarding what may have contributed to the crash, as the incident remains under investigation by the Winnebago County Coroner's Office and the Rockford Police Department.
