It's a tradition that my family must have within the first day or two in the year.

I call this a "two-fer" tradition. Besides it's super yumminess, it's believed to bring good luck and prosperity to you. Now who wouldn't want that?

Hoppin John is a southern style dish that's fairly easy to make with rice, onions, celery, black eyed peas, and ham with seasoning of hot sauce, cumin, salt, etc...
