We've known these closures were going to happen since the beginning of the year, and now we've entered the final days of operation for some popular stores in the Midwest.

It was back on January 10 (2025) that Wisconsin-based Kohl's Department Store announced it would be closing more than two dozen stores, according to ChainStorage.com.

Kohl's Enters Final Days of Store Closures

America's largest department store chain, headquartered in Menonmenee Falls, Wisconsin, revealed that of their 1,150 locations, 27 stores and a fulfillment center are underperforming and would be closing down by April 2025.

According to the list posted on ChainStorage, most of the Kohl's that are on the chopping block are located in California or on the East Coast, there were some stores in the Midwest that would close their doors.

In Ohio, two Kohl's are planned for closure. One is on Hunt Road in Blue Ash, and the other is on Cincinnati Mills Drive in Forest Park, both Cincinnati suburbs.

Two Kohl's locations in Illinois will also be ending operations by April:

  • Plainfield - 11860 S Route 59
  • Spring Hill (West Dundee) - 3000 Spring Hill Ring Rd.

Kohl’s Former CEO on the Decision to Close Stores

The Kohl's CEO who was stepping down back in January (2025) said that as Kohl's continues to "build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams."

According to ChainStorage.com, employees who were being affected by the closing stores were "offered a competitive severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl's."
