How Brantley Gilbert Got His Signature Raspy Voice
Brantley Gilbert's unmistakable raspy voice has become one of the defining characteristics of his music. But was he born with that sound?
Was Brantley Born With That Voice?
During a recent interview with the Q Morning Crew ahead of his Rockford concert, Brantley was asked that exact question, and his answer might surprise fans.
"I don't think I was born with it," Gilbert said, joking that he would be "terrified" if he had come out of the womb with that rasp.
Brantley Gilbert Actually Changed His Voice
According to Gilbert, his voice sounded considerably different when he first started making music. He described his younger singing voice as much cleaner and more nasal.
At the time, Brantley said there were plenty of other artists in the same musical space, and he wanted to develop a sound that would set him apart.
"So, you know, the downside to it was, you know, putting a little rasp in it was kind of the goal," Gilbert explained. The rasp eventually became much more than a new style choice.
The Rasp Became Permanent
Gilbert said he didn't realize at the time that the changes he was making to his voice would be difficult to reverse. "I didn't know it was irreversible," Brantley told the Q Morning Crew.
Over the years, that rasp developed into the signature sound fans now recognize the moment one of his songs comes on the radio. Brantley acknowledged that his distinctive voice isn't necessarily for everyone, but there's definitely no mistaking it.
As he put it, "It's me when it comes on the radio."
