Illinois’ Favorite Music Genre Isn’t Pop, Rock or Country
A concert and event ticketing website called SeatPick used Google Trends over the past 12 months to determine the most-searched music genre in every state.
Illinois’ pick caught me a little off guard.
Researchers compared 18 music genres, including pop, rock, country, hip-hop, metal, R&B, soul, jazz, punk, and more.
Pop was the runaway favorite for the most popular genre across the country, taking the top spot in 13 different states, but Illinois, well, it hit home for me.
That’s because soul music was the most popular genre of music in the Land of Lincoln.

Soul Music Is Illinois' Most Popular Genre
Growing up, I listened to a weird amount of soul music for a kid my age. Sam & Dave, James Brown, stuff like that. Apparently, I was being a good Illinoisan.
Illinois was one of only a handful of states where soul ranked at the top. The other states picking soul were mostly in the South, including Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama.

Wisconsin's Most Popular Music Genre Is Wild
I was pleasantly surprised to see something as timeless as soul get the nod in Illinois, especially when we're sharing that distinction with a handful of Southern states.
Wisconsin’s genre of choice? Metal. The more you know, I guess.
